Turkey launches investigations into animal shelter mistreatment

The Turkish Ministry of Interior has authorized investigations into seven mayors and 74 public officials following inspections of animal shelters across 81 provinces. The audits, conducted by civil inspectors, aimed to ensure the protection of stray animals and improve shelter conditions.

Among those facing investigation are mayors from Muğla Köyceğiz, Erzurum Narman, and Şanlıurfa Hilvan. Authorities have also applied maximum administrative fines to those found responsible for negligence. Additionally, judicial authorities have issued arrest warrants for groups involved in illegal dog fighting and animal violence.

In a separate effort to support animal welfare, the Ministry is coordinating with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to increase vaccination, sterilization, and food support. This includes providing automatic feeding machines to shelters.

Furthermore, under the Zero Waste Project, food waste from institutions such as military units, hospitals, and hotels is being collected in 74 provinces to be converted into animal feed. While the current daily production capacity for such feed reaches over 65,000 kilograms, inspectors noted that several provinces still lack the necessary machinery to convert food waste into animal food.
