Turkey launches tiered natural‑gas tariffs, raising bills for high‑use households

Turkey has introduced a two‑tier natural‑gas pricing system. Consumers whose monthly use stays below region‑specific limits are billed at 16.23 TL per cubic metre, while any usage above the limit is charged at 26.13 TL per cubic metre. Limits vary by province – for example, Istanbul’s limit is 119.96 m³, Ankara’s 109.01 m³, and İzmir’s 66.10 m³. About 21.8 million gas subscribers exist nationwide; roughly 19 million will continue receiving the subsidised rate, whereas an estimated 2.8 million high‑consumption households will shift to the higher tier, potentially seeing bills rise from around 3,990 TL to 5,430 TL in Istanbul.

Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said the subsidy programme will be better targeted to low‑income families and that Turkey aims to boost domestic gas production to supply 8 million households by 2027 and quadruple output by 2028, ending reliance on imports.
