WTO rules against Turkey's taxes on Chinese electric vehicles
A World Trade Organization (WTO) panel report has ruled that Turkey's additional taxes on Chinese electric and certain hybrid vehicles violate international trade rules. The 122-page report (WT/DS629/R) found that Turkey's measures were discriminatory, though it upheld Turkey's right to tax internal combustion engine vehicles.
Deniz Yavuzyılmaz, a Yeni Party lawmaker, criticized the ruling, claiming it could cost Turkey at least 100 million dollars annually and calling for Trade Minister Ömer Bolat to resign and appeal the decision before the September 26, 2026 deadline. Yavuzyılmaz also highlighted concerns regarding tax advantages previously granted to BYD that did not result in expected investments.
The Turkish Ministry of Trade has responded by stating that the panel report is not a final or binding decision and that Turkey maintains its right to appeal. The Ministry clarified that no immediate financial debt or compensation is owed to China based on this report and emphasized its commitment to protecting the domestic automotive industry.
