Turkey maintains fiscal discipline as budget surplus reaches 470 billion lira
Turkish Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek reported that the country is maintaining fiscal discipline despite geopolitical challenges and tax revenue sacrifices made to support disinflation. According to Şimşek, the non-interest budget surplus reached 470 billion lira between January and July, an increase of 228 billion lira compared to the same period last year. He noted that the domestic debt rollover rate has been maintained at 87 percent and stated that the fiscal space created through spending discipline will be redirected toward priority areas.
Simultaneously, reports suggest potential shifts in Turkey’s tight monetary policy. Sources indicate the economic management may introduce flexibility in three key areas to influence market liquidity and the policy transmission mechanism. Proposed changes include narrowing the gap between the policy rate and overnight funding rates, as well as potentially easing credit growth limits for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to address cash flow bottlenecks in the real sector.
