Turkey marks Smyrna anniversary with provocative rhetoric and regional warnings

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs have issued provocative statements marking the 104th anniversary of the 1922 destruction of Smyrna. Erdoğan characterized the event as the ‘liberation of Smyrna from hostile occupation,’ praising Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and the national struggle while omitting the massacres and displacement of the Greek population that occurred during that period.

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs further escalated tensions by accusing Greece of ‘systematic massacres’ and ‘scorched earth’ tactics during the Greek military retreat. This rhetoric is viewed by the Greek side as an attempt to rewrite history and deny the atrocities committed against hundreds of thousands of Greeks.

In a separate address following a cabinet meeting, Erdoğan emphasized Turkey’s determination to protect its national interests and historical ties to a wide geographic region. Invoking the legacy of Suleiman the Magnificent, he warned that Turkey’s measured approach should not be mistaken for weakness and stated that Ankara ‘will not remain a spectator to hostile movements in the region.’
