Turkey military movement reports near Samos labeled as disinformation

Reports circulating in Turkish and Greek media regarding the movement of a Turkish Commando Brigade to the Soke region near the Greek island of Samos have been characterized by defense analysts as a communication “bubble.”

Retired Lieutenant General and defense analyst Lazaros Kampouridis stated that the claims are “Turkish fairy tales,” noting that the 51st Commando Brigade has been stationed in northern Syria since 2018 and will not be withdrawing, a fact supported by the Turkish Minister of Defense. While Turkey has significantly bolstered its military infrastructure in the North Aegean, South Aegean, and Eastern Mediterranean over the last two years—including upgrading airbases and constructing drone vessel infrastructure—this specific movement is viewed as part of a continuous strategy of psychological impression-making and posturing.

Greek authorities are closely monitoring regional military developments, and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has acknowledged the rising tensions in the area, recently remarking that “the sea is becoming wild.”
