Turkey MP says Akkuyu nuclear deal gives Russia $9.8 bn in incentives and adds $5 bn cost to Turkey

CHP parliamentarian Deniz Yavuzyılmaz, speaking at a Turkish Grand Assembly committee meeting, presented documents that he says show the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant has already provided Russia with incentives worth about $9.819 billion. He warned that a proposed amendment to the law would remove the stamp tax on the project and grant VAT exemptions on construction, material and equipment, which he estimates would cost Turkish taxpayers an additional $5 billion.

Yavuzyılmaz criticized the arrangement as the most extensive concession in Turkish history, arguing that Turkey could have taken a larger ownership stake rather than allowing Russia to reap long‑term revenues estimated at $478 billion over the plant’s 100‑year lifespan. He suggested the deal ties Turkey to Russian electricity purchases until 2125 and urged reconsideration of the terms.
