Turkey observes World White Cane Day with accessibility initiatives and awareness events

Various activities and statements were issued in Turkey to observe World White Cane Day on October 15, focusing on the rights and challenges of visually impaired individuals.

In Diyarbakır, the Metropolitan Municipality (DBB) visited the Altı Nokta Blind Association to discuss urban accessibility and promote equal living conditions. During the visit, officials gifted white canes to association members.

In contrast, İsrafil Bayrakçı of the Saadet Party criticized the lack of progress in addressing the needs of the visually impaired. He highlighted ongoing urban obstacles, including the obstruction of yellow guide lines by vehicles, sidewalk encroachments by businesses, and non-functional audio signalization systems.

In Bursa, a sports awareness event was held where basketball players from Final Spor played goalball with their eyes closed. The event, held alongside the Nilüfer Visually Impaired Sports Club, aimed to foster solidarity and help sighted athletes experience the challenges faced by the visually impaired.
