Turkey offers property tax exemptions for certain retirees

In Turkey, retirees who own only a single residence of up to 200 gross square meters may be eligible for a zero-rate property tax exemption. To qualify, the individual must reside in the property and have no income sources other than their retirement pension. Other eligible groups include widowed or orphaned retirees and those receiving disability pensions.

This exemption is not applied automatically. Eligible citizens must apply to their local municipality by submitting a “single residence exception” petition along with documentation, such as a retirement ID or certificate. While the exemption remains valid as long as conditions are met, any change in status—such as selling the property or acquiring additional income like rental or commercial earnings—must be reported to the municipality.
