Turkey expands disability support with new Ankara Nefes Merkezi

Turkey’s Minister of Family and Social Services, Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş, has inaugurated Ankara’s first ‘Nefes Merkezi’ (Breath Center) at the Saray Engelsiz Yaşam Care, Rehabilitation, and Family Counseling Center. The facility is designed to provide short-term care for individuals with disabilities, allowing their families to utilize the service for up to 30 days per year during emergencies, surgeries, or travel. The center has a capacity of 24 people, with separate units for men and women. Göktaş announced plans to expand this service to all 81 provinces in Turkey within a month, building on the 48 centers already established nationwide.

In Mersin, the Metropolitan Municipality reported significant engagement through its own disability support programs. During the first nine months of the year, the Engelsiz Yaşam Merkezi and Engelsiz Yaşam Parkı provided thousands of services, including medical equipment assistance, specialized transportation, and various educational, artistic, and sporting sessions. These local initiatives aim to foster social inclusion and provide respite for families through activities such as therapy, pilates, and specialized workshops.
