Turkey’s TPAO acquires 15% stake in Iraq’s Kirkuk oilfield project
Turkey’s state‑owned Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) purchased a 15 percent share of BP Energy Company of Kirkuk Limited, joining BP and ConocoPhillips in a consortium that will develop the Baba, Avanah, Bai Hassan, Jambur and Khabbaz fields in Iraq’s Kirkuk basin. The fields are estimated to hold more than three billion barrels of oil‑equivalent reserves. The signing ceremony was attended by Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, TPAO General Manager Cem Erdem, BP Upstream executive Andrew McAuslan, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al‑Zaidi. Both leaders described the deal as a historic step toward Turkey’s energy independence and a boost for Iraq’s long‑term energy goals, with the aim of enabling TPAO to produce up to one million barrels of oil and gas per day. The agreement follows the expiry of the decades‑old Iraq‑Turkey crude‑oil pipeline treaty and is intended to create a broader energy‑cooperation framework between the two neighbours.
