Turkey proposes lifelong tobacco ban for those born after 2015

Turkey is preparing a comprehensive new legislative proposal to combat tobacco use, which is expected to be submitted to the Grand National Assembly in October. The draft, developed by the Ministry of Health, includes several radical measures aimed at protecting children and young people.

A central component of the proposal is a lifelong ban on the sale and use of tobacco products for anyone born after January 1, 2015. Additionally, the legislation aims to completely prohibit the production and sale of all tobacco products in Turkey by the year 2040.

Other proposed regulations include: • A ban on smoking in both indoor and outdoor sections of restaurants. • The creation of designated, visually isolated smoking areas in parks, gardens, and public building grounds. • The removal of slim cigarettes from the market and the implementation of standardized packaging. • The introduction of a health tax on cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and heated tobacco products to fund public health services.

Prof. Dr. Toker Ergüder noted that these measures respond to rising tobacco consumption in Turkey, particularly among women and young adults, where usage rates among women aged 15-24 have reportedly exceeded 90 percent.
