Turkey launches nationwide raids targeting LGBTQ+ groups and activists FAST-MOVING
Turkish authorities have launched a nationwide crackdown targeting the LGBTQ+ community through a series of coordinated raids dubbed the ‘My Family is Safe’ operation. The initiative, which spans 15 provinces including Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and Mersin, involves investigations into 162 suspects, nine associations, and 13 businesses.
Justice Minister Akin Gürlek stated the operations aim to protect children, families, and public order, aligning with President Erdogan’s ‘Decade of Family and Population’ initiative. Authorities have alleged involvement in prostitution, the production of obscene content, and the influence of minors. Investigations are also examining foreign funding, with SWIFT records reportedly showing millions of dollars transferred to several LGBTQ associations.
The raids have led to numerous arrests, including activists, journalists, and lawyers. In Istanbul, protests erupted near the Caglayan courthouse, where police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators and detained dozens more. Human rights organizations and international bodies, including the Council of Europe, have expressed deep concern, characterizing the actions as state-led discrimination and a campaign to criminalize LGBTQ+ identities.
