Turkey prepares 13th Judicial Package to reform alimony laws

The Turkish Ministry of Justice is preparing the 13th Judicial Package, a legislative proposal expected to consist of approximately 25 to 30 articles. The package is targeted for submission to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) within October 2026.

A primary focus of the proposed reforms is the restructuring of alimony laws following a Constitutional Court decision to annul the indefinite nature of poverty alimony. Under the proposed model, alimony duration may be linked to the length of the marriage and the economic conditions of the parties. One reported formula suggests that for marriages lasting up to 10 years, alimony could be limited to a maximum of 5 years.

Other potential measures in the draft include accelerating divorce proceedings, addressing property division disputes, and setting time limits for rent determination and eviction cases. The package may also include identity verification requirements for social media accounts. These provisions remain in the draft stage and have not yet been passed into law.
