Turkey tightens security and imposes bans ahead of NATO summit in Ankara
Extensive security checks have begun across Turkey ahead of the NATO summit scheduled for July 7‑8 in Ankara. Police launched large‑scale operations in Bolu and the capital, arresting more than 4,000 people suspected of terrorism, including alleged ISIS members.
Authorities announced a series of restrictions in several provinces: bans on public gatherings and demonstrations were imposed in Karabük, Mersin, Eskişehir, Niğde and Konya for ten days, and the entry of certain vehicles into Ankara was prohibited. The government also implemented tighter air‑traffic controls and other measures to safeguard the summit.
Political leaders, including MHP head Devlet Bahçeli, used the occasion to call for stronger military hospitals, emphasize national security and praise Turkey’s armed forces and defence industry as contributions to NATO’s safety.
