Turkey presidential elections see record low voter turnout
Turkey's presidential elections have recorded a historically low voter turnout, with participation levels not seen in nearly 30 years. Despite the number of polling stations increasing to 78, many stations reported empty corridors and minimal activity. In Istanbul's Avcular neighborhood, for example, only about 50 people had voted by morning, compared to approximately 500 at the same time in previous elections.
Several factors contributed to the low engagement, including a lack of pre-election campaigning and the remote locations of some polling stations. A significant new requirement also impacted voters: those who did not pre-register to vote abroad must now personally complete declarations in front of election commission members. This change has created difficulties for Bulgarian citizens living in Turkey, particularly those who struggle with writing in the Bulgarian language.
Logistical issues were also reported, with voters struggling to locate stations due to outdated online information and some having to walk distances exceeding five kilometers. Some voters reportedly abandoned their attempts to vote due to these physical and administrative hurdles.
