Turkey primary school enrollment may fall below 1 million

Data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) indicates a significant demographic shift that could see the number of children entering primary school in Turkey fall below 1 million for the first time in over five decades.

Based on current population projections, the 0-4 age group consists of approximately 4.76 million children. If this group is distributed equally across five years, the annual number of children entering primary school could drop to roughly 953,000. This would mark a return to levels not seen since the 1970-1971 academic year.

The decline is attributed to falling fertility rates. This trend is expected to impact the broader education system, potentially affecting class sizes, school capacities, teacher requirements, and future investments in school infrastructure as the decrease moves through middle and high school levels.
