Turkey prison population reaches record high of 433,520

The prison population in Turkey has reached a new record high. According to data from the General Directorate of Prisons and Detention Houses, the number of inmates and detainees rose to 433,520 as of August 3, 2026. This follows a previous peak in December 2025, despite recent judicial packages and releases intended to reduce numbers.

Of the total population, 368,293 are convicted prisoners, representing approximately 85 percent, while 65,227 are detainees, making up about 15 percent. The demographic breakdown shows that 95 percent of convicted prisoners are male, while children and women represent a small fraction. Among detainees, there are over 3,000 children.

Parallel to the rising numbers, legal discussions have emerged regarding the duration of pre-trial detentions. Critics and legal professionals have raised concerns that long-term detention of politicians, journalists, and activists is shifting from an exceptional protective measure into a form of punishment before a final verdict is reached, potentially undermining the presumption of innocence.
