Turkey proposes energy cooperation to Greece
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has revealed an energy proposal made by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during the United Nations summit in New York. Instead of importing electricity from 2,000 kilometers away at a cost exceeding 2 billion euros, Erdoğan proposed that Greece source water, electricity, and natural gas from Turkey, located only 70 miles away.
Fidan noted that while tensions in the Aegean Sea have decreased since May 2023, as both governments have prioritized confidence-building measures and conflict avoidance, domestic Greek politics continues to rely on anti-Turkey rhetoric. He described this rhetoric as a political tool used within Greece that prevents the necessary political will to reach final solutions on maritime and Aegean issues.
Fidan emphasized that President Erdoğan possesses the political will to address controversial topics and has repeatedly attempted to work with elected Greek leaders to resolve long-standing disputes.
