Turkey proposes new Black Sea grain transit plan
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has announced that Turkey has developed a plan to ensure the safe transit of grain through the Black Sea. Fidan stated during a press conference in Istanbul that Ankara is currently in communication with both Russia and Ukraine to implement this proposal.
Turkey aims to revive a grain agreement similar to the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which was brokered by Turkey and the United Nations in July 2022. That original agreement facilitated the export of approximately 33 million metric tons of Ukrainian grain despite the ongoing conflict. Russia withdrew from that initiative in 2023, citing difficulties regarding its own food and fertilizer exports.
