Turkey raises concerns over Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean developments

The Turkish Ministry of National Defense has reiterated its long-standing positions regarding the Aegean Sea, the Eastern Mediterranean, and Cyprus. In a weekly press update, the ministry stated it is closely monitoring regional developments, specifically addressing the legal status of Eastern Aegean islands by citing the Treaties of Lausanne and Paris.

Ankara expressed expectations for the Greek side to refrain from actions that could impact regional stability. The ministry also raised concerns regarding the planned electrical interconnection project between Greece, Cyprus, and Israel, asserting that any cable installation or scientific research on the Turkish continental shelf must be conducted in consultation with Turkey.

Furthermore, the ministry commented on the military capabilities and defense cooperation of the Republic of Cyprus, stating that developments in Cyprus are being closely watched. Turkey emphasized that its armed forces maintain a continuous presence in the Eastern Mediterranean through ongoing training exercises in international waters and airspace.
