Turkey ranks second most popular non-EU destination for EU travelers
According to 2024 tourism data released by Eurostat, residents of the European Union conducted approximately 1.19 billion overnight tourism trips. The vast majority of these travels, over 92%, remained within EU borders, with 71.3% occurring domestically and 20.9% within other member states.
Total expenditure for these tourism trips reached approximately 618 billion euros. On average, travelers spent 518 euros per trip, with an average nightly expenditure of 104 euros. While domestic trips averaged 4 nights and 303 euros per person, international trips were longer, averaging 8 nights and 1,053 euros per person.
Regarding non-EU destinations for personal travel, Turkey emerged as the second most preferred destination, accounting for 11% of all trips made outside the union with 8.8 million visits. The United Kingdom ranked first with 14.4 million trips (18%), followed by the United States with 6 million trips (7%) and Switzerland with 5.9 million trips (7%).
