Turkey receives record 503,000 tonnes of EU plastic waste in 2025

In 2025 the European Union sent 503,000 tonnes of plastic waste to Turkey, a 19% rise from the previous year and a 435‑fold increase since 2004, confirming Turkey as the EU’s largest plastic‑waste destination. Greenpeace Turkey’s report highlights that the surge strains recycling facilities, risks uncontrolled burning or burial, and creates micro‑plastic pollution that can enter soil, water and food chains. The United Nations Environment Programme warned that open‑air dumping can release toxic dioxins and furans, endangering public health.

Environmental activist Esmaül Hüsna Aslan of the Zafer Party called for an immediate halt to plastic‑waste imports, transparent monitoring of existing plants, and stricter penalties for ships dumping waste at sea. She cited recent footage from Mersin’s coastline showing extensive plastic debris and micro‑plastics, and noted that the Mediterranean receives about 730 tonnes of plastic daily, accounting for over 95% of surface litter.

The report urges Turkey to align its “Zero Waste” policy with actual waste‑management practices, emphasizing the need for independent audits and stronger enforcement to prevent further environmental and health damage.
