Turkey earthquake reconstruction efforts featured in US media

Major US news outlets, including USA Today and Business Insider, have highlighted Turkey’s large-scale reconstruction efforts following the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes of February 6, 2023. Coordinated by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the initiative has completed 455,357 independent housing units within approximately two years.

The reconstruction program involved approximately 200,000 architects, engineers, and construction workers operating across 3,481 construction sites in 174 different areas. At its peak, production reached a rate equivalent to 23 units per hour or 550 units per day. Beyond housing, the project includes the restoration of infrastructure, schools, commercial areas, and historical city centers, covering an area of approximately 11,000 kilometers.

Specific reconstruction sites include Malatya İkizce, Adıyaman İndere, Hatay Dikmece, and Kahramanmaraş Altınova. The Ministry also utilizes a ‘Yerinde Dönüşüm’ (Transformation on Site) program to support citizens rebuilding homes and businesses on their own land. The efforts aim not only to provide housing but to revitalize economic and social life while building disaster-resilient cities.
