Turkey energy sector: Widespread outages and geothermal tenders
Turkey is seeing widespread planned electricity outages across multiple provinces, including Van, Gaziantep, Denizli, Muğla, Adana, Yozgat, Trabzon, Eskişehir, İzmir, and Istanbul. These disruptions are primarily due to infrastructure maintenance, network improvements, and investment works. In some regions, such as Beylikdüzü, residents have reported prolonged outages at social facilities.
In Erzurum, the provincial administration is moving to monetize geothermal potential by opening two search license areas in Aşkale and Pasinler for tender. The auction, scheduled for October 13, 2026, aims to support energy, greenhouse, and thermal tourism investments.
Regarding energy policy, discussions are underway concerning the 2027 electricity tariff limits. There is a possibility that the annual consumption threshold for state-subsidized residential tariffs could be lowered from 4,000 kWh to 3,000 or 3,500 kWh, potentially moving more high-consumption households to the 'Last Resource Supply Tariff'.
