Turkey reopens probe into 2009 death of Special Forces chief Behçet Oktay

Behçet Oktay, former head of Turkey's Special Operations Directorate, was found shot dead on 25 February 2009 in Ankara. The case was closed as a suicide based on his own weapon, but his family and critics have long questioned that conclusion.

In 2017, following the 2016 coup attempt and subsequent scrutiny of FETÖ-linked investigations, Turkish authorities reopened the file. More than a decade later, the investigation remains incomplete, with sister Şule Oktay telling Odatv that she believes the murder was orchestrated by FETÖ and that essential evidence and witnesses have yet to be examined. She links the case to other unresolved deaths, such as the 2009 helicopter crash of politician Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu, which was also reopened years later. The family is demanding a transparent criminal investigation and accountability for the unanswered questions surrounding the 2009 incident.
