Turkey reports surge in violence and suspicious deaths of women
During the week of September 6–12, multiple incidents of violence against women were reported across various cities in Turkey, highlighting ongoing issues of domestic abuse and physical assault.
In Manisa, a man seriously injured his wife and 24-year-old daughter with a knife. In Isparta, a woman undergoing a divorce was shot and seriously wounded by her former partner. Other reported incidents included a group assault on a woman in Adana, a physical assault in Istanbul's Beyoğlu district, and a stabbing in Adıyaman involving a man attempting to intervene in an assault.
In Van, the death of 25-year-old Nurten Merter is currently under investigation as a suspicious death. These events have prompted calls for more effective implementation of existing laws and better coordination between police, social services, and the judiciary to protect women who have previously sought legal assistance or protection orders.
