Turkey retirement conditions vary by insurance start date

Current retirement regulations in Turkey vary significantly based on an individual's initial insurance start date, employment status, and specific social security provisions. Under existing Social Security Institution (SGK) rules, disability retirement can be achieved with 1,800 premium days, provided the individual has at least 10 years of insurance and meets specific loss-of-workforce criteria.

For those seeking standard retirement, requirements include 3,600 premium days combined with a specific age requirement, which varies by gender and the date the age requirement is met. For workers who first entered the system after April 30, 2008, partial retirement may be possible with 5,400 premium days, though the specific requirements depend on the year of entry.

There is ongoing public discussion regarding a 'gradual retirement' (kademeli emeklilik) model, particularly for those who started working after September 8, 1999, and did not benefit from previous reforms. While there are various proposals and parliamentary inquiries regarding this model, no new legislation has been passed. Currently, official retirement ages and premium requirements remain governed by existing laws, such as the 58-year age requirement for women and 60-year requirement for men who entered the system between September 1999 and April 2008.
