Turkey schedules extensive electricity outages in Izmir and Ankara in early May
Turkey’s electricity distributors announced a series of planned grid‑maintenance outages affecting millions of residents. Gediz Elektrik (GDZ) will carry out network renewal and periodic maintenance on 7 May, cutting power in 19 districts across Izmir from early morning until late afternoon, with specific schedules for neighborhoods such as Bornova (09:30‑15:30), Konak (12:00‑16:00) and Karaburun (09:00‑16:00). A second program on 8 May targets 14 Izmir districts, including Bayraklı, Karabağlar, Buca and Seferihisar, with interruptions lasting from a few minutes up to four hours.
In the capital, Ankara, the electricity provider will implement similar maintenance on 7‑9 May across dozens of districts, including Altındağ, Çankaya, Mamak, Etimesgut, Keçiören, Gölbaşı and Sincan. The outages will be staggered throughout each day, with some neighborhoods experiencing day‑long blackouts. Authorities have urged residents to unplug appliances and, for businesses using generators, to follow safety procedures.
Both programs aim to strengthen power lines, reduce fault risk and improve overall supply reliability ahead of the summer season.
