Turkey seismic activity: Experts warn of Marmara earthquake risk

Experts are raising warnings regarding seismic activity in Turkey. Associate Professor Bülent Özmen of Gazi University noted that recent tremors near the Princes' Islands (Adalar) confirm the Adalar fault is active. He warned that the probability of a magnitude 7 or greater earthquake in the Marmara region is increasing daily, suggesting the potential impact could be worse than the February 6 earthquakes.

In a separate region, seismic activity has been recorded near Alanya and Gazipaşa in the Mediterranean. İhsan Erman Kaptanoğlu of the Chamber of Geophysics Engineers stated that small-scale tremors between magnitudes 2 and 4 are a natural result of the movement between the African and Anatolian plates. He clarified that while these movements are part of the active tectonic structure of the Eastern Mediterranean, small tremors alone are not definitive predictors of a larger upcoming earthquake.
