Turkey street animal collections spark protests and welfare concerns

Following the implementation of Law No. 7527, which amended the Animal Protection Law on August 2, 2024, street animal collection efforts have intensified across Turkey, sparking protests and concerns regarding animal welfare.

In Foça, animal rights advocates have initiated a ‘Life Watch’ in front of the Foça Municipality. Protesters are demonstrating against nighttime collection operations, arguing that these actions threaten the right to life of street animals. This movement follows previous demonstrations in Konak, where activists demanded transparency regarding the number of animals collected and the capacity of local shelters.

In Diyarbakır, HAYTAP representatives report that collection efforts have accelerated significantly following inspections by ministry officials. While local authorities previously indicated that only injured or aggressive animals would be removed, advocates claim that elderly, disabled, and young animals are now being collected as part of a reported daily quota. Furthermore, concerns have been raised regarding shelter conditions; in Diyarbakır, a facility with a capacity for 500 animals is estimated to hold approximately 1,500 dogs, leading to severe overcrowding.
