Turkey student housing and living cost challenges

In Turkey, university students are facing significant challenges regarding housing and living expenses as the new academic term approaches. In Eskişehir, Faruk Güler has called for urgent solutions to the student housing crisis, noting that high rents, deposits, and moving costs are placing an immense economic burden on families. Güler suggested that municipalities should take responsibility by converting unused public buildings into student dormitories and increasing overall dormitory capacity to provide safe and affordable options.

Meanwhile, in Konya, students opting for private housing are turning to second-hand markets to manage costs. At the Tellal Pazarı market, organizers noted that furnishing a basic student home can start at approximately 17,000 TL. Available items include washing machines starting from 2,500 TL, single-door refrigerators from 4,500 TL, and televisions starting at 2,000 TL. Local market representatives are encouraging students to utilize these second-hand options to mitigate the rising costs of setting up new residences.
