On August 26, the cargo ship Lider Bordo Mavi was struck by drones, causing a fire and injuring five crew members. The following day, the Lider Kocatepe was targeted by drones while attempting to assist the damaged vessel. The Lider Kocatepe sustained damage and was forced to return to the Turkish port of Samsun.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry expressed grave concerns regarding the safety of navigation, personnel, and the marine environment. This escalation follows a broader pattern of maritime instability; Turkish ship owners report that at least 22 civilian vessels linked to Turkey have been attacked over the last two months.

Ankara has previously called for a moratorium on attacks against commercial shipping, with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warning that both Russia and Ukraine have been targeting merchant vessels without distinction. Turkey, which controls the Bosphorus Strait, maintains a position as a mediator in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
