Turkey targets 4,500 MW geothermal capacity by 2035

Turkey is positioning itself as a major player in the geothermal energy sector, aiming to increase its installed capacity from 1,800 MW to 4,500 MW within the next decade to meet 2035 National Energy Targets. This expansion is expected to involve approximately $10 billion in investments.

Ali Kındap, Chairman of the Geothermal Energy Association (JED), stated that Turkey's 68 existing geothermal power plants utilize the latest technology and adhere to high environmental standards. These facilities are monitored 24/7 by authorities, including the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, to ensure emission compliance.

Beyond electricity generation, geothermal resources support various sectors such as greenhouse farming, thermal tourism, and residential heating. Afyonkarahisar leads the country in residential geothermal heating with over 55,000 homes, followed by Izmir with approximately 41,000 homes.
