Turkey targets global salmon export leadership

Turkey is positioning itself as a major global player in the salmon export market, having risen to 11th place globally. Salmon export values have seen rapid growth, increasing from $29 million in 2019 to $396 million in 2023. Projections suggest exports could reach $520 million by 2025.

To achieve these goals, Turkish exporters aim to adopt marketing and promotion strategies similar to those used by the Norwegian Seafood Council. The sector aims to increase salmon's share of total Turkish seafood exports from 2.8% to 24% by 2026.

Simultaneously, Turkey has seen a significant surge in seafood exports to China. Following protocols signed between the two nations regarding health and inspection conditions, seafood exports to China rose by 190% in the first nine months of the year, reaching $18.007 million. This growth was driven by salmon, sea bass, sea bream, and tuna, with salmon exports to China specifically increasing by 93% compared to the same period last year.
