Turkey announces action plan to combat illegal digital betting
Turkish officials convened a panel in Ankara to address the rising threat of illegal betting and digital gambling addiction. Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz emphasized that these activities have become transborder threats, intersecting with organized crime and unregulated financial structures to jeopardize public order and economic security.
To combat this, the government is implementing an Action Plan for Combating Illegal Betting, Games of Chance, and Gambling in Virtual Environments, which includes 7 priority areas and 71 specific actions. A key component of this strategy is the development of a centralized artificial intelligence infrastructure to allow various institutions to share data and more effectively detect illegal networks.
Communication President Burhanettin Duran warned of the psychological manipulation used by digital platforms, specifically citing “dark patterns” designed to keep users engaged through instant gratification. RTÜK President Mehmet Daniş noted that the fight must extend beyond simple content regulation to include a holistic approach involving media literacy and the protection of children from digital gambling advertisements, particularly in sports broadcasting.
