Turkey journalists hold nationwide protests against media crackdown
Journalists, human rights organizations, and opposition figures held coordinated demonstrations across ten Turkish cities, including Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and Adana, to protest increasing pressure on press freedom. Protesters used the slogan “Enough! We can no longer breathe!” to denounce the rising number of arrests, censorship, and the appointment of government-appointed administrators to media outlets.
The demonstrations follow several recent escalations, including the police raid on Halk TV, a major opposition-aligned news channel, and the blocking of the digital news outlet T24. According to the Turkish Journalists’ Union (TGS), 11 journalists have been imprisoned in the last two months. Additionally, four journalists were recently detained or placed under house arrest on suspicion of spreading disinformation following their coverage of an investment fund scandal.
Organizers stated that the combination of judicial proceedings, digital access restrictions, and the use of trustees to control media companies constitutes a systematic effort to reduce independent scrutiny of the government. The protests, which included marches in major urban centers, marked one of the largest mobilizations by Turkish media professionals in recent years.
