Turkey to build 1,200‑km transport corridor through Iraq as alternative to Strait of Hormuz

Turkey announced a plan to construct a 1,200‑km transport corridor linking the Persian Gulf port of Al‑Faw in Iraq to Turkey and onward to Europe. The project will encompass a railway, highway, telecommunications and energy infrastructure and is estimated to cost up to $15 billion.

Minister of Transport Abdulkadir Uraloglu said the aim is to complete the corridor within three years, faster than the original four‑to‑five‑year timeline. The route is intended to provide an alternative for cargo shipments, reducing global logistics reliance on the Strait of Hormuz and the Suez Canal amid heightened risk of disruption from the US‑Iran conflict. The initiative involves Turkey, Iraq, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
