Turkey to open Çerkezköy-Kapıkule high-speed rail section on October 9

Turkey is set to inaugurate the 153-kilometer Çerkezköy-Kapıkule section of the Halkalı-Kapıkule High-Speed Train Line on October 9. The opening ceremony is expected to be attended by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu stated that the new line is designed for an operating speed of 200 kilometers per hour and features double tracks, electrification, and Level-1 signaling. The project includes significant infrastructure such as 31 bridges, 8 tunnels, 2 viaducts, and 114 overpasses and underpasses.

The new section will significantly reduce travel times: passenger transit between Halkalı and Kapıkule will drop from 4 hours to 1.5 hours, while freight transit will decrease from 8.5 hours to 3.5 hours. The project aims to increase annual passenger capacity from 600,000 to approximately 3 million and freight capacity from 1.5 million tons to 9.5 million tons.

This development is intended to strengthen Turkey’s connection to the European railway network, particularly benefiting industrial zones and ports in Istanbul, Kocaeli, Tekirdağ, and the Trakya region. It serves as a critical gateway for the Middle Corridor, facilitating access to European markets.
