Turkey Ministry of Interior implements new school security measures
Turkey’s Ministry of Interior has announced a comprehensive security initiative to protect students in schools. During a high-level public order meeting led by Minister Mustafa Çiftçi, new directives were issued to the police and gendarmerie to intensify surveillance and presence around educational institutions.
A key component of the plan requires security personnel, including neighborhood watchmen and gendarmerie security guards, to be on duty at least thirty minutes before students arrive at school. Authorities will increase patrols during school entry and exit times, as well as during lunch breaks, focusing on school surroundings, student shuttle services, and abandoned buildings.
The ministry is also implementing a program called ‘Compassion Shield’ (Şefkat Kalkanı). This initiative aims to involve families in school safety by training parents to recognize early warning signs of behavioral changes, such as withdrawal or aggression, which could indicate risks like bullying, drug use, or potential violence. The program emphasizes early detection and coordination between teachers, guidance counselors, and law enforcement to mitigate risks before they escalate.
