Turkey to secure Russian diesel via US-Russia deal and expand Black Sea gas

Turkey has announced it will secure a portion of Russian diesel exports through a supply agreement between the United States and Russia. Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar stated that the arrangement is vital for Turkey’s energy security, noting that Ankara is working to diversify its energy sources, which currently include Russia, Iran, and Azerbaijan.

The diesel deal, which has faced criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and various European and Republican officials, involves Russia releasing specific volumes of fuel to global markets. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright defended the arrangement, suggesting it could help lower global fuel prices.

In addition to diesel imports, Turkey is expanding its domestic natural gas production in the Black Sea. The Osman Gazi floating production platform was recently deployed to the Sakarya field, a move expected to increase daily output from 9.5 million to 20 million cubic meters. Turkey also plans to launch a second, larger floating platform in the first quarter of 2028, which is projected to bring total daily Black Sea production to 45 million cubic meters.
