Turkey to reform medication access and home healthcare services
Turkey's Minister of Health, Kemal Memişoğlu, has announced a major reform to healthcare accessibility, focusing on chronic disease management and home-based services. A new system is being developed in coordination with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security that would allow patients with valid medical reports to collect their medications directly from pharmacies in monthly doses without needing a new doctor's prescription every three months, provided their treatment remains unchanged.
The reform also includes significant expansions to family physician capabilities, with 1,859 additional medications now authorized for family doctors to prescribe. To support the elderly and bedridden, the ministry is restructuring home healthcare services by integrating remote monitoring technology, palliative care, and family medicine through new coordination centers.
Additionally, the ministry has established 747 palliative critical care areas to support patients who have completed intensive care but still require life-support or close monitoring. For citizens aged 80 and over, medical reports for medications and disabilities can now be processed directly at their homes to minimize hospital visits.
