Turkey tourism faces decline as rising costs erode budget reputation

Turkey is losing its reputation as an affordable holiday destination as rising inflation and specific exchange rate policies increase costs for international travelers. Data from Turkey’s Culture and Tourism Ministry shows a decline in foreign visitor arrivals, with decreases of 3.6% in May, 4% in June, and 0.3% in July compared to the previous year.

A primary driver is the Turkish government's policy of keeping the lira's depreciation rate below the rate of domestic inflation. While intended to curb inflation and ease the burden on local consumers, this strategy makes the country more expensive for those arriving with foreign currencies like the British pound or Euro.

Travelers and industry professionals report significant price hikes in hotels, restaurants, and leisure activities. For example, some visitors noted that activities like jet-skiing have seen dramatic price increases. Consequently, many tourists, particularly from the United Kingdom, are increasingly opting for alternative destinations such as Montenegro, Tunisia, Slovenia, and Greece.
