Turkey university students face housing crisis amid rising rents

Following the announcement of YKS placement results, university students in Turkey are facing a significant housing crisis. In Istanbul, private dormitory monthly fees have surged, with single rooms in Beşiktaş reaching up to 76,000 TL, while more affordable options in Esenyurt start around 15,000 TL. Rent prices for apartments are also high, with averages in major cities reaching 45,000 TL, forcing many students to seek shared housing.

Political figures, including CHP's Erkut Tamay, have called on the government to build more student dormitories to prevent students from being subject to exorbitant private sector prices. In response to local needs, the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality continues to provide affordable housing through five municipal dormitories and guesthouses.

In a notable academic development, the newly established Bitlis Eren University Faculty of Medicine has seen unexpected success. Despite not having a completed campus building, its 30-person quota was fully filled by high-ranking students. This interest is driven by a unique model where students will complete their first three years of education at Istanbul University’s Çapa Faculty of Medicine and receive significant monthly scholarships ranging from 30,000 to 50,000 TL.
