Turkey updates HGS payment security and warns of fraud
The General Directorate of Highways (KGM) has implemented security updates to the Fast Pass System (HGS) to protect personal data. As of October 2026, the ability for third parties to pay HGS violation debts using only a vehicle license plate has been abolished. The system is now fully integrated with the e-Devlet platform, requiring official identity verification. To prevent unauthorized individuals from accessing travel routes and debt details, users must now match their identity information with the vehicle's registration records. Currently, debt settlement via the e-Devlet mobile app is unavailable; drivers must use web browsers like Safari or Chrome to complete these transactions.
In conjunction with these changes, authorities have issued warnings regarding widespread SMS fraud. Scammers are using fake messages claiming unpaid HGS debts or traffic fines to trick citizens into clicking malicious links. These links lead to fraudulent websites designed to steal bank details and personal information. The KGM emphasized that it does not send debt notifications or payment warnings via SMS. Similar scams involving fake cargo delivery fees and fraudulent e-Devlet login alerts have also been reported.
