Turkey updates Cyprus military readiness as regional tensions rise

Turkey’s Defence Minister Yaşar Güler announced that the military readiness of the Turkish Armed Forces for Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has been meticulously updated. In a written response to a parliamentary question, Güler said the updates address security risks across the Eastern Mediterranean and the Syrian border, and that NATO’s post‑Cold‑War focus on out‑of‑area operations, crisis management and a rule‑based international order underpins Turkey’s actions. He also noted that Turkey monitors Israeli activities that breach the 1974 Agreement in southern Syria and the Greek Cypriot administration, and that Turkey coordinates with the Syrian government to preserve Syria’s territorial integrity. Güler added that Turkey works with NATO allies Bulgaria and Romania to maintain security and stability in the Black Sea.

Northern Cyprus President Ersin Tatar reiterated that the sovereignty and self‑determination rights of the Turkish Cypriot people will not be compromised. He criticised recent United Nations Security Council initiatives on Cyprus as attempts to impose an external will and stressed that Turkey’s guarantee remains essential for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
