Turkey updates neighborhood watchmen recruitment regulations
New regulations for the recruitment of neighborhood watchmen (çarşı ve mahalle bekçisi) in Turkey have been established following a change published in the Official Gazette on April 9, 2026. These watchmen serve as support elements for the police force, focusing on maintaining public order and preventing theft during night hours.
Key updated requirements for candidates include being a Turkish citizen and holding at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Male candidates must have completed their military service. Age requirements specify that applicants must be at least 18 years old and not yet 31 as of January 1 of the exam year. Additionally, candidates must have resided in the province they are applying to for at least one year and meet specific health and criminal record standards.
Regarding working conditions, the standard weekly working hours are set at 40 hours. However, this may be extended to 56 hours with the approval of the governor in cases of personnel shortages or high duty intensity. Official announcements regarding the 2026 recruitment schedule, quotas, and application dates will be released by the General Directorate of Security and the Police Academy.
