Turkey updates regulations for temporary vehicle imports

The Turkish Ministry of Trade has implemented new regulations regarding the temporary import of land vehicles, as published in the Official Gazette. The changes clarify the definition and requirements for retirement certificates and establish new rules for vehicle usage.

Under the updated rules, a retirement certificate must be a document issued under the social security legislation of the relevant country, proving that the individual residing outside the Turkish Customs Territory is retired due to employment. This document must be accompanied by a Turkish translation approved by an embassy, consulate, or notary.

Regarding vehicle usage, individuals who are retired from abroad—including those retired due to disability or those with early retirement rights—may be granted a 730-day period for their vehicles upon presenting the required documentation.

The regulation also specifies who may operate these temporarily imported vehicles. Spouses or direct relatives (ascendants or descendants) residing outside the Turkish Customs Territory are permitted to use the vehicles. Additionally, other individuals residing outside Turkey may drive the vehicle provided that the permit holder is present in the car.
