Turkey upgrades military presence in Cyprus amid economic shifts

Turkey is significantly upgrading its military infrastructure in occupied Cyprus to advance its geopolitical ambitions. The military airbase at Lefkoniko has been upgraded to host permanent combat aircraft, including six F-16 fighter jets stationed at Ercan since March. Additionally, Bayraktar TB2 drones are being utilized for surveillance and reconnaissance missions, with systems capable of reaching as far as Lebanon and Israel.

Simultaneously, Turkey is facing economic challenges as it revises its medium-term economic program through 2029. Due to rising energy costs and regional conflicts involving Iran, the government has sharply increased its inflation target for the end of 2027 to 21%, up from a previous estimate of 9%. Economic growth forecasts have also been lowered, with 2026 growth expected at 3.3% compared to the previous 3.8% projection. Central Bank Governor Fatih Karahan attributed the inflation discrepancies to the heightened intensity of the conflict with Iran.
