Turkey urban transformation drives machinery demand and energy standards

Urban transformation in Turkey is evolving into a large-scale industrial activity affecting construction capacity, employment, and equipment needs. According to data from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, 927,000 housing units have been transformed in Istanbul, with construction continuing on 300,000 additional independent units. This scale requires strategic planning regarding machinery selection, such as using mini-excavators for narrow urban spaces and larger excavators for foundation and excavation work.

Simultaneously, the sector is shifting toward qualitative transformation focused on energy performance and sustainability. The revised TS 825 standard, effective as of April 1, 2025, has updated thermal insulation rules to include cooling requirements alongside heating. By increasing the number of climate zones from four to six based on General Directorate of Meteorology data, the new regulations aim to improve building envelopes. These updates are projected to reduce energy bills by 25% without compromising comfort, potentially saving 2.5 terawatt-hours of energy annually in new constructions.
